Aluminum Only!
The Shear-Hog is an aluminum cutting end mill! It cannot cut steel! We have used it with success in plastics and brass.
Tormach 440
Recommended Shear-Hog: Tormach 0.75″ Shear-Hog
RPM: 10,000 (SFM: 1,963)
Feedrate: 40 IPM or 1,000MM/min. This is a 0.004 inch per tooth or 0.1MM per tooth feedrate
Width of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm
Depth of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm
Tormach 770
Recommended Shear-Hog: Tormach 0.75″ Shear-Hog
RPM: 10,000 (SFM: 1,963)
Feedrate: 40 IPM or 1,000MM/min. This is a 0.004 inch per tooth or 0.1MM per tooth feedrate
Width of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm
Depth of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm
Tormach 1100
Recommended Shear-Hog: Tormach 0.75″ Shear-Hog
RPM: 5,100 (SFM: 1,000)
Feedrate: 40 IPM (1,000MM/min) up to 65 IPM
Width of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm; possible to increase depending on IPM, rigidity of setup
Depth of Cut: No more than 0.2″ or 5mm
VMC (Vertical Machining Center – e.g. HAAS CNC Mill, VF2, etc)
Recommended Shear-Hog & Tool Notes:
Any of the Shear-Hogs will work well machining aluminum in a Vertical Machining Center. We use and recommend either:
1) SH100: a single-flute, 1.0″ diameter Shear-Hog that can also plunge in Z.
2) SH125: a two-flute Shear-Hog; this will increase your material removal rate by allowing higher IPM’s due to having two flutes. It can still ramp into internal pockets at 8 degrees.
- AB Tools does *not* recommend the smaller 0.75″ Shear-Hog (e.g. the Tormach ShearHog) in VMC’s as the smaller diameter tool is not as strong as the 1″+ size Shear-Hogs.
- Tool Holder: Use a set screw holder (request milled flat from AB Tools [no charge]) or milling chuck. We do not recommend ER-32, collet, etc.
- The Shear-Hog, particularly the single flute tool, requires a rigid workpiece setup and can be very loud. Just beware!
- Use Thru Spindle Coolant if available
SFM: We have run up to 3,000 SFM
Feedrate: We have run up to 0.02″ feed per tooth (0.5MM)
Width of Cut: 75% of tool diameter
Depth of Cut: .25″ (6.3MM)
