Fusion 360 Post Processor Error: DSI Fixes Probing with Multiple WCS Error!

Our Fusion 360 Okuma Post Processor worked great for Probing an Angle along X (or Y) using the G11 (aka G68) style coordinate shift rotation!

BUT – it would NOT work when posting to multiple WCS offsets! We got the error “WCS offset cannot change while using angle rotation compensation”. This error seemed bogus, but I wasn’t comfortable fixing it, so we reached out to Dr. Phil from DSI to help get it working!

Watch along as Dr. Phil (@the_dr.phil_experience on IG) from DSI troubleshoots and corrects our post-processor issue! This video gives a behind the scenes look into the Fusion 360 support and post processor development services that DSI offers.

Hiring Employees & Interns for a Machine Shop!

Let’s have a candid talk about how we at SMW find and hiring employees and interns.

What has worked well – and what hasn’t. Where do we find employees? How do we conduct interviews? What do we expect from employees but – equally as important – what does SMW offer them!

How to Get Started with Tormach and Fusion 360!

If you just got a Tormach and are anxious to get your first part made: you’re in the right place!

This video goes step-by-step through creating the Fusion 360 CAM Setup, the first CAM operation, setting up the tool, simulating the G-Code, posting the code, loading it into PathPilot, setting up the WCS on the Tormach machine, and hitting cycle start! We also mention good safety tips and point out the most obvious areas we see folks make mistakes or crash.

PROTECT YOUR HAIMER: Python Script Prevents Spin Up!

One of the worst things you can do is spin up a probe in your machine.

In today’s video, we’ll walk through installing a simple Python script that was written by a Tormach community member. This script will disable your spindle from turning on accidentally with a probe installed and is a great way to get access to Pathpilot’s inner workings without modifying the “guts”.

3D Printed Chip Evacuation!

3D printing is a game changer for our machine shop!

Chips love to congregate around angular parts of the machine as well as the base of the chip augers. Clearing out mounds of chips was a hassle and we’ve been through different solutions over the past year including a 3D printed auger extender that was “cute” but ultimately failed. This time, we took a practical approach that uses a force that’s free and accessible: gravity! This 3D printed auger cover looks like a tiny house roof and it gets the job done! Let’s walk through the Fusion 360 CAD model, the loft command, how to prepare and install the auger cover, and some additional helpful tips!

Improve Renishaw Probing by Adjusting Overtravel!

Haas Renishaw VPS probing routines are great!

We use the rectangle block often but it’s a hassle to have to jog the machine probe to the center of the part! Luckily, we have access to the actual Renishaw Probe code, so we can change the default overtravel value!

Okuma Genos M660-V Machine Overview!

We purchased an Okuma M660 Vertical Machining Center.

In this video, we discuss why we chose this machine, what the buying process was like, and what we have learned in our first few months of running the machine.

Machining a Torx Pattern into a Hex-Head Bolt!

Torx Head FTW!

We modified hex head screws into torx for a custom fixturing setup. We weren’t sure of the material, nor could we find exact feeds and speeds recommendations for this 0.02″ (0.49 mm) Harvey Tool Endmill, so we created our own reliable cutting recipes! Let’s tackle the Fusion 360 CAD/CAM, discuss setups for one-off vs production runs, and why clocking the workpiece is important.
